What is the Short Story?
The “Bent Out Of Shape” Short Film – Proof of Concept takes place on a film set in between scenes. It is the catalyst scene of our feature. We’ve had to rewrite it to fit our budget and the best way to tell the story. We go into principal filming August 13 and wrap on August 15 if all goes well.
Bent Out of Shape is personal story, inspired by Emma Lyle’s experience as a teen actress with scoliosis working in an industry that often refuses to portray beauty as anything but their largely unattainable standard.
THIS FILM & SCOLIOSIS
Teenagers are already challenged by having to deal with the pressures of being a teen – throw in a diagnosis of Scoliosis and the added challenge may affect his or her self-confidence, relationship to peers and everyday behavior.
Many studies have found that teenagers with scoliosis are not happy with their appearance. Many refuse to wear bathing suits, tank tops, or tight fitting clothing.
Teenagers with scoliosis are also commonly unwilling to be involved with activities requiring them to wear a swimming suit or other clothing that might easily reveal the curvature of their spine, all of which can lead to social isolation.
Long term statistical studies show patients deeply affected by scoliosis are more prone to depression and alcoholism later in life with 4 out of 5 women with scoliosis, never marrying.
Being diagnosed with scoliosis can cause your teen a lot of stress. When first diagnosed, your child may feel anxiety, fear, and withdrawal.
It has taken Emma two years to develop the self confidence to wear a bathing suit and feel good about it. We want to inspire and help other girls with body image issue and scoliosis feel good too.
What is the Feature Story?
“Bent Out Of Shape” is the story of Harper Walsh (played by me), an up and coming actor, who at age 15 is diagnosed with Scoliosis. Harper puts her film career on hold to make some dramatic life changes. She convinces her mother to leave Hollywood and return to their hometown so she can focus on her physical therapy and enroll in regular high school. Unfortunately, Harper finds it difficult to fit in with the kids she left behind.
Like many of us, Harper stumbles through issues with boys, mean girls, former fame, popularity, and her own self image as her scoliosis get worse permanently deforming the shape of her body.
Ultimately Harper learns to appreciate her difficult but loving mother and her body, no matter how bent out of shape they both get.
It was written by my mother, Nyna and me over the last two years.

Creating a film is no easy task and we know that we will encounter some bumps in the road along the way.
We are building a team of talented crew members with incredible skills, but we are aware that having a small crew means everyone is taking on a lot of work. We’re hoping that with enough support and a well-planned out production, our project will go off without a hitch.
